Why do I need a Statistician for AI?

When constructing a model, software or AI it is inevitable that some sort of data collection would take place.

Why would you need a Statistician?

A statistician (check out the Royal Statistical Society Consultants Directory) is specifically trained in data collection and analysis. This give confidence in the credibility of the person undertaking these activities but also in the compliance of the work undertaken. Many projects that do not use the properly qualified professional end up

  • doing expensive data collection to find out the data is inappropriate
  • spending more money collecting more data
  • can’t use their chosen analysis method due to poor data collection
  • have no idea what analysis method to use
  • have not connected the data collection and analysis methodologies
  • insure reputational and financial damage

just by trying to avoid using someone correctly qualified for the job. The spend to fix these issues far outspends the level required to just get the correct person involved at the start. Many models/software/AI are pulled out of service due to the catalogue of incurred issues above and so waste an entire project and potentially valuable insight because of a poor approach to development.
