Why did you apply for professional membership?

My career spans applied mathematics, data science, and artificial intelligence across academia, healthcare research, and higher education. My work increasingly focuses on applying AI and advanced quantitative methods to real-world problems, particularly in biomedical research and data-driven decision-support systems.

I joined FRACTAI (Formerly the AI Group at IST) to align myself with a professional body that promotes high standards, ethical practice, and responsible innovation in artificial intelligence.

What impact has professional membership had on your career development?

Professional membership has strengthened my professional identity and confidence as an AI and data practitioner. It provides external recognition of my ability to work autonomously, apply sound analytical judgement, and contribute meaningfully in multidisciplinary environments.

In academic and healthcare-focused collaborations, professional membership supports credibility when working with researchers, clinicians, and technical stakeholders, and reinforces my commitment to ethical and responsible AI practice.

How did the application process support your professional development?

The application process encouraged structured reflection on my skills, experience, and long-term career goals. It helped me clearly articulate how my background in applied mathematics, data science, and AI translates into professional competence and responsibility.

This reflection reinforced the importance of continuing professional development and clarified my intention to contribute to high-quality, trustworthy AI-enabled solutions in healthcare and digital technology.

What aspects of professional membership do you find most rewarding?

One of the most rewarding aspects of my professional membership has been the opportunity to contribute to the wider professional community. During my membership with the AI Group at IST, I served as a Volunteer Secretary within the AI Standards Working Group, supporting standards-focused activities through coordination, documentation, and professional communication.

These experiences strengthened my understanding of professional standards, ethical considerations, and collaborative working in AI, and continue to inform my engagement as a member of FRACTAI.

What advice would you give to others considering professional membership?

I would strongly encourage AI and digital practitioners to pursue professional membership. It provides meaningful recognition of experience and responsibility, while promoting reflection, accountability, and continued growth.

Professional membership demonstrates credibility and commitment to high standards, even where formal accreditation is not required, and plays an important role in building trust across the AI and digital technology sectors.
